Ivory Coast's reconciliation under threat from victor's justice - documentary Subscribe to the Guardian HERE: http://bitly.com/UvkFpD Atrocities were committed on both sides during Ivory Coast's post-election conflict two years ago, in which more than 3,000 people died. But while former president Laurent Gbagbo awaits a potential war crimes trial at the Hague, not a single person has been charged among those who fought for the current president Alassane Ouatarra. What impact will this have on the country's prospects for long-term reconciliation?
This video was recorded by Kulanu Vice-President Bonita Nathan Sussman, July 2014 on a Kulanu visit to Abidjan, Cote d'Ivoire where she, her husband Rabbi Gerald Sussman and Professor Marla Brettschneider met with leaders of four communities there - Beth Israel, Etz Chayyim, the Danites and the Kabbalah Center. Please enjoy this video of Alexandre Cornet, a community leader blowing the shofar, as our new year's greeting to you! Alexandre is sitting in their nearly-completed synagogue building, which they started building in preparation for this visit by Kulanu volunteers. (15 Sep 2016) Customers are headed back to the markets in Ivory Coast to buy bushmeat after the lifting of a government ban in force for over two years. The sale and consumption of wild animals was banned in 2014 as part of a raft of measures designed to counter the feared spread of the deadly Ebola virus outbreak into Ivory Coast. The government has also announced the reopening of land borders with Guinea and Liberia, neighbours hard hit by the Ebola outbreak. The lifting of the ban and the reopening of routes was announced last Thursday, just ahead of the Eid holidays, the Muslim festival for which many people travel home. On Thursday, shoppers flocked back to the bushmeat market in the Yopougon suburb of Abidjan, missing the taste of the Agouti cane rats, or Grasscutters as they ar...
Here is a video showing both African solidarity in the face of danger, at the same time a very strong bull refusing to die. Eid al-Adha is a muslim fiesta where many cows sheep and others are killed and eaten. But this bull is not going without a fight. Eid al-Adha, also called the "Sacrifice Feast", is the second of two Muslim holidays celebrated worldwide each year, and considered the holier of the two
UN and French troops bombarded targets around the residence of Laurent Gbagbo in the city of Abidjan. The UN says its raids were carried out to protect civilians. Forces loyal to the internationally recognised winner of the presidential poll Alassane Ouattara have since claimed to have captured the palace. He'd been refusing to cede power ever since losing last November's election. Hundreds have been killed during a week of fighting in the country. Moe Seager from the Americans Against the War group says by intervening in Ivory Coast, the UN and France were actually pursuing a double goal.
